  1. German scholar of Christian theology,
  2. philosophy (especially Aristotle), natural
  3. science, chemistry, and physics. He was known
  4. as `doctor universalis' because of the
  5. breadth of his knowledge. Feast day 15 Nov.
  6. He studied at Bologna and Padua, and entered
  7. the Dominican order 1223. He taught at
  8. Cologne and lectured from 1245 at Paris
  9. University. St Thomas Aquinas was his pupil
  10. there, and followed him to Cologne 1248. He
  11. became provincial of the Dominicans in
  12. Germany 1254, and was made bishop of Ratisbon
  13. 1260. Two years later he resigned and
  14. eventually retired to his convent at Cologne.
  15. He tried to reconcile Aristotelian thought
  16. with Christian teachings.
